BioWhen he was eight Luffy ate an Akuma no mi (Devil’s Fruit) the Gomu Gomu no mi and thus became a rubber boy; but he also was cursed by the sea (like every person that eats a Devil’s Fruit) and he’s incapable of swimming.
He also met Red Head Shanks, a famous pirate who used to visit his village when he was little, and after a series of events in which Shanks lost his arm protecting him, Luffy made a promise with the Red-Head pirate that he would become the King of Pirates and Shanks gave him his straw-hat (boshi) to seal that promise (Hat that Luffy considers his most beloved treasure [Dare to touch it and die D:])
So when he turned seventeen he sailed to the seas to find his own pirate crew and going through a lot of adventures with them.
Luffy is cheerful, naïve and easily impressed &/or distracted. He cares deeply for his crew and he sees them as a family (and would seriously kick the ass of anybody that would dare to hurt them). He spends most of his time thinking about food and going on adventure.
